Goat 101 Financials: Hey, just going to share some thoughts for you to consider: You could purchase a CD for $5000.00 and hope you get 6% interest. That should give you at least $300.00 for the year. OR If you purchased 4 Does for $5000.00. Kid them out, you should get 8 kids. Lots of scenarios, BUT, we will be cheap and just figure you get 4 kids and sell them cheap for near sale barn prices of $500.00 each. Thus $2000.00. Livestock is gambling, but, odds are usually in your favor.

Picture taken 4/9/26 Bear Creek BC R1369 Hello Darlin is our newest herdsire, we put him with 9 Does on 1 Oct 2025 when he was just 5 1/2 months old. His kids started arriving 27 Feb 2026 and all but one kidded by 22 March 2026. Darlin IS NOT FOR SALE at this time, BUT, some of his kids will be available around the middle of June 2026. He has a good bite; 2 teats each side, no split. He weighed 192 lbs. on 18 Feb 2026 giving him a .59 average daily gain, so, he has recovered from the breeding pen. I have to BRAG on him, he is so very kind, we put him with the weaned bucklings that were born in Dec 2025 and he has been nothing but a gentleman. But, of course he is NOT yet a year old, thus kinda a big kid himself.
UPDATE 12 August 2026: We showed Darlin on 7 and 8 August 2026 at the Ozark Empire Fair. He was the Reserve Overall Grand Champion Buck on 7 Aug and Division Champion both days. He was lucky to have gotten a second look, he has been breeding Does since 9 July 2026 and has lost 25 lbs. He weighed 253 lbs. on 9 June 2026 and 228 lbs. on 12 Aug 2026. |

He has a good bite and 2 teats widely separated on each side. He weighed 125 lbs. on 31 July 2026 giving him a .50 average daily gain. BUT, prior to going into the breeding pen with 6 does on 9 July 2026, he had a .62 average daily gain on 9 June 2026. He has alot of pieces I love, that include horn set, big bone, wide front end and a butt. I believe he looks alot like his Grandsire Bear Creek BC G1068 Dream Maker **Ennobled** on his dam's side.
12 August 2026 UPDATE: Gabriel will be our clean up buck in a couple of weeks. Darlin's Does were pulled from him today, thus Gabriel will hopefully be available for a new herd around 1 October 2026.
11 September 2026 UPDATE: Gabriel will need to stay a little longer than October 2026. BUT, eventually he will be looking for some new girlfriends.

Commercial Goat Operation 101 Consider your Kids normally weigh 50 lbs. when 3 months old New Buck cost $1500.00 Your Kids from new Buck now weigh 60 lbs. when 3 months old Market price is $3.00 per lb. UPDATE 03/28/2021 GREAT NEWS: I wrote this in 2020, this year 2021 I first heard price of $4.10 THEN heard $6.00 a pound. WOW a great time to be raising goats. You sell 50 kids: you now have i.e. 50 kids X 10 lbs = 500 MORE lbs to sell @ $3.00 per lb. This equals $1500.00, so your Buck is paid for the first year . This is just stuff to think about, your kids could weigh even more and/or you may have to upgrade some of your Doe’s to get where you want to go. If fast weight gain is your goal, it is cheaper to feed a good goat than a bad one. PLUS even your labor should be cut in half if you are selling kids at 3 months instead of 6 months. One more thing, you may want to pull the top kids and offer them as show prospects to the 4-H and FFA kids and that could easily pay for new buck #2. There are NO guarantees when raising Livestock except that someday they will die. A lot depends on weather, management and so much more, it is a continued learning experience.
